A charming lido is located in the heart of the Mönchengladbach Volksgarten park. Since its restoration in recent years, when it was redesigned in part and brought up to state of the art technical standards, it has been renamed “Volksbad”, a name originally adopted in 1926. The lido owes its special charm to a listed art nouveau building reflecting in the water and surrounded by a 20,000 sqm recreational green area amidst a one hundred year old landscaped garden with old tree population.

The operator Niederrheinische Versorgung und Verkehr AG (Mönchengladbach) created a bathing-landscape with pools for swimming, diving and for swimming lessons, as well as leisure and infants pools, and all of them offer those amenities which make for a perfect sunny day out at the lido: diving platform, massage jets and jacuzzi beds for the adults and fun things for the kids such as spray nozzle, slides, water spouts and hand pumps. Besides the large green lawn, there is now a sandy beach and a veranda tempting the visitor to sit down on one of the beach or deck chairs – the perfect setting to linger and enjoy.

Last year the walkable roof of the listed art nouveau building with its staircases was due for restoration. Large area leakages and chalk leachings had shown on the stairs. In good time prior to the start of the second bathing season in the refurbished Volksbad, a new roof sealing and tile cladding had to be carried out on a surface area of approx. 860 sqm. Also included in the range of services were 88 steps and 10 sqm of stair landings.

The expert consulted by the owner recommended a panels sealing conforming to DIN 18195-T5 standards under a covering of ceramic elements on a loose chippings bed. Considering the reduced headroom, the constructor decided for bonded tiling and the configuration of an effective drainage system using Gutjahr AquaDrain® EK drainage mats and PCI Pavifix DM drain mortar. The solution has been worked out jointly by Lepping GmbH & Co. KG involving applications engineers Messrs Ludwig and Marx of PCI Augsburg GmbH and by Mr. Gutjahr – Managing Director of Gutjahr Innovative Bauelemente GmbH and publicly appointed and sworn expert.
