Munich climbing park
Whether climbing or bouldering, the climbing option featuring a course at jumping height: The old DAV Kletter- und Boulderzentrum München [German Alpine Association Climbing and Bouldering Center Munich] gym was bursting at the seams. Following the completed expansion, the sports facility with its approx. 7,800 square metres of climbing and bouldering surface is now by far the largest of its kind in the world. And about 1,400 square metres of tile in the new climbing gym, in the newly built entry area and in the restrooms and staircases of the old facility ensure solid traction pre- and post-climb. The requirements: the highest load-bearing capacity of the floor covering, as well as comprehensive hygiene and easy cleaning.
The floors of the sanitary areas in the old facility and those throughout the new facility are cement screed. Subject to their ultimate use, the substrates had to be prepared in different ways. First, the entire 1,400 square-metre surface was primed with PCI Gisogrund 303 for smooth, non-absorbent substrates. The shower and restroom floors were waterproofed using PCI Seccoral 1K. PCI Lastogum was used on the restroom walls, as well as in the bistro's kitchen and in the handhold storeroom; a liquid surface waterproofing that was developed especially for wet and damp areas. For isolating the tile cover from the substrate, the floors throughout were lined with PCI Pecilastic U, a pressure-resistant sheeting for waterproofing and isolating. Its multilayer design also reduces impact and ambient noise, which creates a pleasant atmospheric environment.
Because of the extra floor load due to the considerable number of sportspeople, vibrations and the occasionally warm atmospheric environment, the floor tilers laid the ceramic tiles throughout using flexible PCI Flexmörtel and PCI Flexmörtel Schnell tile adhesive. The Quick version is safe to walk on and can be grouted after three hours and is ideally suited for time-sensitive work. For narrow seams of three millimetres, the choice came down to PCI Nanofug, the flexible joint grout in dark cement-gray or a lighter gray-shaded pergamon. Last but not least, all corner, connection and movement joints were sealed with Silcoferm S, a self-adhesive, odourless silicone sealant. To ensure visual unity, the shades cement-gray and pergamon were used here to match the joint grout. At the end of the construction period, lasting a total of ten months, the client indicated that he was thoroughly satisfied with the result. Manufacturer Fliesen Eder accentuated the smooth work flow in particular, which not least has to be attributed to the excellent collaboration of PCI technical consultant Ludwig Eichstetter and to PCI's reliable specialty products.
