Impervious for another 100 years
The railroad station of Stettin/Germany was heavily damaged during the 2nd World War.
For many years the retaining wall marked the border between the two boroughs of Berlin – Mitte and Wedding. The construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961 gave the structure a completely new meaning. All of a sudden the entire railway territory of the former railroad station was located in the borderland. The railway territory was completely levelled and reconstructed to the notorious death zone. The retaining wall became part of the border installations which were the most strictly guarded ones of the world. The accesses and exits in the retaining wall were covered with concrete “eternally”.
Today there are only few memories reminding of this changeful history. The actual borderline is marked by a plain double row of pavers, nature took possession of the open areas. The retaining wall being the last structure of a railroad station which was modern then considering the circumstances at the time is the border of the former railway territory to the adjacent streets.
The retaining wall to be reconstructed is a heavy weight retaining wall built in the seventies of the 19th century consisting of clinkers in a special format introduced at the time. The wall made of clinkers supports the former railway territory of the previous “Stettin railroad station” which is approx. 3 metres above the level of the adjacent streets.
